What is Crinkle Nylon? The story behind our signature fabric

Crinkle nylon has been our go-to fabric for over 30 years. It’s the backbone of our brand, and the reason we’re able to design bags that are lightweight, durable, and water-resistant. But where did it come from? How did it become our signature fabric? And what is it realllllyy? We are spilling the details about our secret sauce, so get comfortable, because it’s story time.

A HAPPY ACCIDENT

It was the spring of '87 when three young designer pals in Antwerp were hard at work designing bags for their new accessory brand. During the dying process, the nylon fabric overheated leaving it- you guessed it- crinkled. Deciding to embrace the error, they dubbed the event a ‘happy accident’ and wasted no time with their new formula. And the rest is history, folks. Crinkle nylon became a signature of our handbag designs and has been used ever since.

WHAT IS CRINKLE NYLON?

For starters, it’s not your average nylon. Although it is durable and lightweight like its sister fabric, crinkle nylon is a textured sportswear fabric that is durable, water-resistant and comes in a spectrum of colors.

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT IT?

It is light as a feather, unbelievably durable and super easy to clean. All you need to do is wipe the outside fabric with a wet cloth and hang to dry. And ta-da! Your nylon bag will be looking brand-spankin' new. In case of a deep stain, you can clean crinkle nylon with a cloth or soft brush using water and neutral soap.

Insider tip: Be sure to limit the exposure to direct heat or sunlight to avoid fading, avoid bleach, and do not soak in water. Use caution when carrying a light bag while wearing dark colored denim to prevent color transfer.

Crinkle Nylon is the signature fabric we’ve been using since our brand was introduced in the late 80s. Simply put, it is part of our rich heritage and DNA that makes us the iconic brand that we are today. We owe a lot to this wildly wonderful fabric.
